Hi! I'm Cindy: an artist, illustrator, and designer based in NYC.

This work is the second of my series depicting scenes from Vietnamese folk tales. In Vietnamese, this tale is called "Trương Chi và Mị Nương." It's about a princess who falls in love with a fisherman when she hears him singing but later rejects him when they meet face to face for the first time. I illustrated the first moment that she falls in love, ensconced in her palace.

I was watching a lot of The Pitt (while eating dinner) when I came up with the concept for this one. Along with seeing all the GLP-1 and Facetune ads on the subway, it got me thinking a lot about the line between medicine and poison, and all the different body modifications that are achievable now.

This piece is inspired by my sense of dread at the omnipresence of technology in my life. I've seen a few Buddhist art shows at the now defunct Rubin Museum, and I've always been struck by how the gods are depicted as violent yet ordered. With this illustration, I wanted to explore what modern gods and vices would look like using the language of Buddhist art.

This piece is a riff a Neon Genesis Evangelion (90s anime about robots and armageddon) meme. Since we live in an era many have called technofeudalism, I thought it would be funny to have a jester in the famous Shinji chair pose.

This work is the first of my series depicting scenes from Vietnamese folk tales. It's called "Ăn khế trả vàng" in Vietnamese. The legend tells the story of an older brother who takes most of his younger brother's share of their inheritance, except for a starfruit tree and a tiny bit of land. When the older brother finds out that a bird who flies people to a magical land filled with gold and jewels has been visiting his brother's starfruit tree, he insists on switching. The illustration depicts the moment the older brother's greed catches up to him, as the bird struggles under the weight of the gold and lets him go to drown.

This pattern was created for washi tape that I will be selling in my store, Holey Ceiling Studios. It was inspired by a photo of my cat curled up in a blanket so that he looked like a snail. I was also thinking about all the funny medieval illustrations that you would see in the margins of a page, especially the animal ones.

The mural was inspired by a similar lacquer painting in my parents' house that depicts cranes gathered around a tree. I used thinned house paint in many washes to get a watercolor-like look.

This design was created for my stationery store Holey Ceiling Studios. I was inspired, of course, by the numerous NYC rats scurrying around. I wanted to create a rat-themed motif that was both beautiful and a little odd.

This piece tells the story of when I lived in a house in college that developed a leak and then a crack. A plumber came and opened everything up, but when he saw that the pipes were encased in concrete, he didn't end up fixing it. Eventually, when my roommates moved out, it was just me and the giant hole in the ceiling.
